BACKGROUND
The Barbados Co-operative & Credit Union League Ltd. (BCCULL) is the trade association of the co-operative movement which supports the development of co-operatives, advocates for an enabling environment, defends the interests of co-operatives and contributes to building the profile of the movement in the eyes of the wider Barbadian community and beyond.
The League focuses on providing training solutions and member education, specifically designed for the Barbados credit union system and market ensuring relevance to local regulatory, operational and member needs.
Primary Training Focus
Co-operative Principle #5: Education, Training and Information
Co-operatives provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, managers, and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their co-operatives. They inform the general public - particularly young people and opinion leaders - about the nature and benefits of co-operation.
Secondary Training Focus
Credit Union Operating Principle 7. Financial Literacy.
Credit unions provide relevant education to their members, officers, and employees for their economic, social, democratic and professional development. Training and education in financial literacy supports members’ informed choices in thrift, debt, wise use of credit and financial planning and budgeting. Providing skill sets and knowledge that allow members to make informed and effective decisions with all of their financial resources are essential in serving member needs. Credit unions also provide education to their members in rights and responsibilities of members.
The League will distribute the training opportunities to our member co-operatives. It is the responsibility of each member society to ensure that these training opportunities are actively shared with their volunteers, staff, and members, reinforcing continuous learning and capacity building within the sector.
