HALLY HAYNES ASCENDS TO THE PRESIDENCY OF THE CARIBBEAN CONFEDERATION OF CREDIT UNIONS

Hally Haynes was elected President of the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions (CCCU) at the first meeting of the Board of Directors of the Confederation after the conclusion of the Annual General Meeting held on June 19, 2017 in Cuba.  Haynes is only the second Barbadian to serve in this capacity at the regional level, throughout the entire history of this regional body.

Haynes after his elevation commented that “it is a great privilege to serve in this capacity and lead the CCCU during such a challenging period, given the very difficult environment that is characteristic of most of the regional economies.”  He further stated that his urgent priorities would be “to lift the Confederation’s profile as the leading advocate for Credit Unions across the region including at the level of CARICOM, and to help facilitate the roll out of the next generation of products and services in all CCCU territories in the region.”

Haynes is a seasoned and well-respected credit unionist who has served the movement at both the national and regional level for more than two decades.  He is a past President of the Barbados Police Credit Union and has served on the Board of the League beginning in the 1990s and more recently completed a six-year term which ended in 2014.  During that period he served for four consecutive years as President of the League.

Haynes’ elevation took place in Cuba where the Confederation recently held its Convention and Annual General Meeting in Varadero from June 16 to 21, 2017 at the Memories Varadero Beach Resort.  The theme for this year’s event was “Co-operatives: Reshaping Caribbean Sustainable Development.”

A delegation of seventy-five (75) credit unionists left Barbados en route to Varadero via Havana to attend the first ever regional Convention to be held in Cuba.  The delegation was led by Anderson Henry, President of the League and included representatives from fifteen (15) member credit unions. In total five hundred and thirteen (513) persons from across seventeen (17) member countries of the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions participated in this Convention.

Attendees at this year’s Convention had the opportunity to hear presentations from a cadre of high profile presenters, including Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines who was the Featured Speaker at the official Opening Ceremony. The Opening Ceremony was graced with the presence of all CARICOM Ambassadors to Cuba, including Donna Forde, Barbados’ Chargé d’Affaires.  Leaders of the Barbados delegation interfaced with Ms. Forde after the conclusion of the Ceremony.

The educational segment of the Convention featured plenary and break-out sessions and topics such as the following were discussed:

 1.      Strategies for Emerging Credit Union Leaders

 2.      Maximising Social Media & IT Platforms Towards Business Enhancement

It has been recognised that if credit unions are to remain sustainable and effective nation building institutions then they need to invest in the further development of their leaders.

To this end, registering persons to attend a development education programme is a key step in propelling credit unions forward.
